Anne Breux and Nina Magon are dramatically different interior designers, but both talked about contemporary/modern design in sessions at Access Design, a quarterly event sponsored by the Houston Chronicle and the Houston Design Center.

Breux, a modern minimalist, was educated in architecture in Paris and later found her way to Houston where she creates very modern homes and works as a docent at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Breux’s training and early work established an aesthetic she still maintains, that nothing in a home should compete with art or the clothes a homeowner wears. That calls for simple color palettes and lots of solid colors.

Magon came to the U.S. via Canada, where her parents had emigrated to from India years ago. Magon studied economics and business, yet found both subjects lacking. She found her place in interior design and has established a fashion-forward firm in Contour Interior Design. Magon’s firm handled the chic interiors at the 51 fifteen restaurant at the Galleria and the designer herself was a contestant on NBC’s “American Dream Builders” in 2014. She talked about project that tackled turning traditional homes into contemporary showpieces.

At Access Design, both women talked about access to modern furnishings and the combinations and colors that work best. Black and white is Magon’s go-to palette, and Breux leans on white walls for her art-dominated spaces.

Also at the event, Laura Umansky, creative director of Laura U Interior Design, talked about the historic preservation and renovation of her own Southampton home, a much-neglected Tudor that got a top-to-bottom makeover.

Veronica Solomon of Casa Vilora Interiors, who in September was a designated design blogger at the High Point Market talked about trends in coming collections, including great lighting, leather furniture and a new trending color: green.

The next Access Design event will be in February.
