Creative Risottos by Some of Houston’s Top Chefs Won at the 10th International Risotto Festival

 

On, November 10, 2013, more than 650 fans of fine food and wine enjoyed delicious Italian cuisine at The 10th International Risotto Festival held at The Houston Design Center.  This year’s culinary competition benefited The Education Foundation*, providing scholarships for students at The Art Institute of Houston & The Art Institute of Houston-North, a branch of The Art Institute of Houston.

Fifteen chefs from some of Houston’s top restaurants showcased their unique risotto recipes in a competition judged by both the public and a panel of judges.  Master of Ceremonies Peter Remington, publisher of Modern Luxury Houston Magazine, revealed the winners at the awards presentation.  Honorable Mention went to Chef Jon Buchanan of Trevisio.  Taking 3rd place was Chef Jamie Zelko of Zelko Bistro  and 2nd place was Chef Lulzim Shimag, Arcodoro. The Winner of the 10th International Risotto Festival was Chef Maurizio Ferrarese, Quattro/Four Seasons Hotel.  Chef Ferrarese’s winning recipe was an “old fashioned” Saffron Milanese Risotto, a combination of risotto with saffron, bone marrow, porcini mushrooms and veal osso buco.  The People’s Choice was awarded to Chef Ryan Hildebrand, Triniti and The Best New Entry was awarded to Chef Brandi McHan, Vic & Anthony’s.

Other top chefs who competed in this year’s competition including, Kevin Bryant, Eleven XI, Ricky Cruz, Grotto, Jonathan LeBlanc, The Tasting Room, Carmelo Mauro, Carmelo’s, Michael Pellegrino, Max’s Wine Dive, Manuel Pucha, Philippe, Elliot Waits, The Art Institute of Houston, and John Watt, Prego.  Assisting in the risotto presentations, dishes were presented to the judges by students from The Art Institute of Houston, Culinary School.

The Honorary Chair of the 2013 International Risotto Festival was the Consul General of Italy, Fabrizio Nava, and Lucinda and Javier Loya served as Event Chairs.
